HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc746-7W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action he is taking to develop the design for an artificial limb socket devised by Dr. Isherwood which won first prize at the British Genius Exhibition; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alfred Morris:

This new type of socket has been developed at the Department's Bio-mechanical Research and Development Unit in an endeavour to meet the problems of a small number of amputees who experience frequent and unpredictable changes in the size of their stumps. The socket has been on clinical trial at the Roehampton Limb Fitting Centre. The next step is to test the socket under actual service conditons, and this is being discussed with a limb contractor. I hope that this wider trial will go ahead shortly.
