§ 24. Mr. Goodhartasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what further action she is taking to implement the Bullock Report on Literacy.
§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsHer Majesty's inspectors continue to monitor the response by local education authorities to168W the recommendations of the Bullock Committee and to collaborate with authorities in formulating plans for the continuing development of language teaching based on the findings of the committee. In the present year discussions have been held with 57 local authorities on action taken and planned in response to the Bullock Report, including the provision of in-service training in language.
§ 50. Mr. Viggersasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will make a statement on any proposals which she may have to reduce the level of adult illiteracy.
§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsThe present provision for adult literacy tuition is already achieving encouraging results, and, as I said in reply to Written Questions on 26th October—[Vol. 936, c.817–191]—I am confident that local education authorities will continue to meet this need when the Adult Literacy Resource Agency's pump-priming ceases on 31st March 1978. It was assumed in the calculations underlying the RSG settlement for 1978–79, announced on 18th November, that authorities would continue their adult literacy provision at its current level. I hope to make an announcement shortly on the other outstanding matters to which I referred on 26th October.
