Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the number of jobs created per mile of motorway and dual carriageway respectively.

Mr. McElhone

No estimate can be made without unreasonable cost because of the wide variations in employment on and off site during the progress of construction and as between schemes over different terrain.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the number of people engaged on maintenance work on the M8 motorway.

Mr. McElhone

The number of people so engaged is not constant but varies according to the work to be undertaken.
