asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will allocate funds for the retraining of teachers of other subjects in modern languages.

Mr. Oakes

No. The evidence is that the shortage of modern language teachers is declining and that the remaining shortage is mainly of graduates and those able to teach two modern languages. A retraining programme for teachers of other subjects would not help to satisfy these needs.
