Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how much financial assistance has been committed to manufacturing industry in (a) the Merseyside special development area and (b) the other assisted areas under Section 8 of the industry scheme of the national industrial strategy.

Investment carried out or proposed in the Merseyside special development area has led to: (a) payment of an estimated £125 million in regional development grants; (b) offers of £39 million of regional selective assistance under Section 7 of the Industry Act 1972—further projects involving investment of £31 million are currently under consideration; (c) offers of nearly £2 million of assistance through the schemes introduced by this Government under Section 8 of the Industry Act 1972. Applications for further projects involving investment of £10 million are also under consideration.

Some £78 million of assistance has been committed under Section 8 schemes introduced by this Government for projects in the other assisted areas.
