§ Mr. Wigleyasked the Secretary of State for Wales what statutory provisions exist to oblige water authorities to ensure that 394W there is an adequate water supply to all recognised fire hydrant points in public highways; what steps can be taken against water authorities that fail to meet any such obligation; and if he is satisfied with the current legislation on the matter.
§ Mr. Alec JonesThe statutory responsibility for ensuring an adequate supply of water for fire-fighting purposes rests with fire authorities. They are empowered to enter into agreements with water undertakers on the provision of water and fire hydrants. Penalties are prescribed by law which may be applied to a water undertaker in default of such an agreement. I have no reason to believe that current legislation is unsatisfactory.
