HC Deb 15 November 1977 vol 939 cc112-3W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the names of all textile companies situated in the north-west of England which have received Government aid during the last 12 months for which figures are available; and if he will list the amount given to each company.

Mr. Cryer

Apart from the lists published quarterly inTrade and Industry showing payments above a certain threshold of regional development grant and selective financial assistance under Section 7 and 8 of the Industry Act 1972, information about grants and loans made to individual applicants is confidential. It would in any event require a disproportionate amount of cost and staff effort to provide this information.

As far as temporary employment subsidy is concerned, information about individual companies is regarded by the Department of Employment as confidential.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the total amount of aid given to the textile industry in the United Kingdom for the year October 1976 to September 1977.

Mr. Cryer

The following payments were made during the period in question:

(£m)

Sections 7 and 8 of the Industry Act 1972 5.7 *1.9
Regional Development Grant 7.5 *2.6
Temporary Employment Subsidy 39.5 40.2
