HC Deb 15 November 1977 vol 939 cc162-4W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, if it is the practice for confidential school reports on school pupils to be made, and to be retained after such pupils have left school; in what circumstances the contents of any such reports are divulged to third parties such as potential or actual employers of ex-pupils; in what circumstances, if any, the contents are not divulged to the ex-pupils themselves or their parents; and if she will make a statement.

Miss Margaret Jackson

It is an essential part of a school's normal work to keep educational records, and on request to provide references for prospective employers. It is for individual local education authorities to decide on the form, content and availability of the records kept in schools. As part of the wider review of their curricular activities occasioned by the recent Green Paper "Education in Schools: a Consultative Document", we will shortly be asking local education authorities to examine and report on their existing record-keeping practices.
