HC Deb 15 November 1977 vol 939 c131W
Mr. Miscampbell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he proposes to take to bring to the notice of the public the risks to health in ear piercing which is performed inexpertly or in unhygienic conditions.

Mr. Moyle

I am aware that ear piercing for the wearing of ear ornaments by unhygienic methods is causing some concern, particularly when it is children whose ears are pierced. I am therefore asking the Health Education Council what help it might give in drawing the risks to the attention of the public and I welcome this opportunity to urge upon all those who seek to have their own or their children's ear pierced to have this done by persons able to provide a pain-free and hygienic service, such as a general practitioner willing to do it privately or reputable jewellers who have traditionally provided this service.
