Civil servants may be allowed up to five days' paid sick leave, subject to a maximum of 10 days in any period of 12 months, without providing a doctor's statement. I understand from my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Education and Science and for the Environment that teachers and adminis- 558W trative professional, technical and clerical staff employed by local authorities are not normally required to provide a doctor's statement for the first three days of sick absence but there is no specified annual limit.
