HC Deb 18 May 1977 vol 932 cc189-90W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Trade, from information available to him from international sources, how many countries in the Western world charge an airport landing tax; which countries they are, and how much they charge per passenger.

Mr. Clinton Davis

This information is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what consideration has been given to the institution of a passenger landing tax at airports; and how much would have been raised in each of of the past five years if a charge of £2 per passenger had been made.

Mr. Clinton Davis

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to a passenger landing tax levied by the Government as a source of general revenue, in which case I would inform him that no consideration has been given to the introduction of such a tax at United Kingdom airports. It is estimated that in the last five years a tax of £2 per arriving passenger would have produced the following amounts:

£million
1972 39
1973 43
1974 40
1975 42
1976 45
