HC Deb 09 May 1977 vol 931 cc376-7W
Mr. Hicks

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the total consumption of wine in the United Kingdom for the last year for which statistics are available; what proportion of this amount is bottled in the United Kingdom; what proportion is imported already bottled; and what proportion is grown and produced in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Strang

Statistics of consumption are not available, but import duty was paid on 60.4 million gallons of wine of fresh grapes entering the United Kingdom in 1976, of which 37.2 per cent. was imported ready bottled. During the same period an estimated further 50,000 gallons was produced within the United Kingdom from the 1975 harvest, representing 0.08 per cent. of the total available for consumption.
