§ Mr. Gould
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what quantities of radioactive waste have been dumped at Sandhills, near Gosport in Hampshire; what safeguards have been taken to protect the health of residents in the area; what is the origin of the waste which has been dumped; and whether the dumping which has taken place has been carried out in accordance with the authorisation granted.
§ Mr. Shore
About 350 cubic metres of slightly radioactive earth and rubble have been disposed of at Sandhills Lane. The waste comes from the site of a dismantled luminising workshop at Hilsea. It was mixed with large quantities of inert material and buried to a depth of 1½ metres. The disposal was authorised by my Department after the Radiochemical Inspectorate had satisfied itself that it 365W represented no radiological hazard and Hampshire County Council, as waste disposal authority, had concurred in the use of the site.
