§ Mrs. Millie Millerasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what sum has been allocated in the current estimates to research into the problems of multiple sclerosis.
§ Mr. MoyleResearch on multiple sclerosis from Government funds is carried out mainly by the Medical Research Council from support by the health departments and the Department of Education and Science. Estimated expenditure by the Council in 1976–77 directly related to the disease was £829,000. Estimated expenditure in 1977–78 cannot be forecast but the Council324W anticipates it will remain at about that level.
In addition to research directly related to the disease the Council also supports a substantial amount of work under other headings which may be of considerable relevance.
Research directly related to the disease and under other headings which may be of relevance is also undertaken in universities and medical schools but details of the sums involved are not known centrally.
The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain and Northern Ireland also promotes research from its own funds.
