HC Deb 09 May 1977 vol 931 c365W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will take steps to prohibit use on agricultural land of sewage sludges contaminated by toxic metals from industry.

Mr. Denis Howell

As pointed out in the Jeger Report of the Working Party on Sewage Disposal, the properly-controlled disposal of sewage sludge to agricultural land is a good method and should be encouraged where appropriate. Care is needed to ensure that the concentrations of individual constituents are not such as to create environmental, agricultural or health problems, and research is being undertaken to ensure that the necessary guidance is given to the disposing authorities.
