HC Deb 02 May 1977 vol 931 cc54-5W
Mr. Mates

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what modifications to normal conditions of service have been introduced to assist in the particular problems facing his Department's staff who serve in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

The modifications to normal conditions of service introduced to assist United Kingdom civil servants serving in Northern Ireland cover assistance in the fields of housing, travel and education. Compensation may be paid for the loss in sale value of property attributable to the unrest in Northern Ireland; travel by air to and from Great Britain is admissible for staff eligible to travel normally by surface; and staff accompanied by their families may undertake a free visit to Great Britain after 12 months' service. In addition, boarding-school or guardianship allowance may be granted on the same basis as is applicable to a United Kingdom civil servant sent on an overseas tour of duty, if he leaves his child or children at boarding school or with a guardian.
