HC Deb 15 March 1977 vol 928 c144W
11. Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps she is taking to raise the quality of teaching in mathematics, science and modern languages.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

Following an invitation to 11 colleges to mount courses for teachers in the shortage subject of craft and technology, my Department has now invited a similar number of coileges to take part in special courses for intending specialist teachers of mathematics. Unemployed teachers with one A-level in mathematics would be considered for these courses, as would serving teachers. The further contribution of teacher training, particularly in key areas of the curriculum, is among the topics which are being considered in the current regional conferences.

17. Mr. Jessel

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of students entering higher education is taking mathematical or scientific subjects.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

37 per cent. of full-time and sandwich-course students entering higher education in Great Britain in 1975–76 were taking mathematics or science subjects.
