Mr. MacCormick

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if Her Majesty's Government plan to allow shipbuilders in the United Kingdom to contract for the supply of nuclear submarines to the Republic of Israel.

Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he will make a statement about the construction and sale of three Vickers IKL submarines to Israel;

(2) when authorisation was given by Her Majesty's Government for the sale

It is not the practice to comment on particular sales of defence equipment. Any request for the supply of submarines or other defence equipment to Israel or to any other country in the Middle East would be considered in the light of our declared policy of arms sales to that area. There is no question of our allowing nuclear submarines to be supplied.
