§ Mr. Sandelsonasked the Secretary of State for Defence how much money was spent on overseas travel by his Department during the latest year for which 596W figures are available; and of this sum, how much was spent on travel by air.
§ Mr. WellbelovedIn the financial year 1975–76 the Department's expenditure on overseas travel by commercial means was of the order of £9.6 million. Of this, the amount spent on civil charter and civil air passages was £7.7 million. A high proportion of overseas movement is carried out by RAF transport aircraft combining productive peace-time flying on administrative trooping and exercises with essential training for operational situations. The withdrawal from overseas bases will progressively reduce the extent of overseas travel.
