§ Mr. Patrick Jenkinasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will introduce legislation on the lines of the new French law on harvesting organs for transplantation.
§ Mr. EnnalsNo. I do not consider that existing legislation is a major obstacle to an increase in the number of kidney transplants and I think legislation on the lines suggested would be unacceptable to many people. Prior to the new law in France about 350 transplants were undertaken annually in that country compared with about 600 in the United Kingdom. I am examining other ways to encourage more people to donate organs for transplants.
