HC Deb 23 June 1977 vol 933 cc532-4W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of redundancies in Strathclyde as notified to his Department since February 1974.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the information is not available in the form requested. However, the total number of redundancies recorded as due to occur in the Strathclyde Region between 1st February 1974 and 28th February 1976 was 33,060. From 8th March 1976 to 31st May 1977, 50,645 proposed redundancies in Strathclyde were notified to my Department in accordance with the requirements of Section 100 of the Employment Protection Act which came into force on 8th March 1976.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many redundancies in Strathclyde are presently under 90 days' notification to his Department.

Mr. Golding

During the period 1st March 1977 to 31st March 1977 the number of proposed redundancies involving 100 or more dismissals notified in Strathclyde to my Department in accordance with Section 100 of the Employment Protection Act totalled 5,117. This figure excludes those notifications where there has been formal notice of withdrawal. Information about the number of proposed redundancies still pending in Strathclyde which involve 100 or more proposed dismissals and which require at least 90 days' notification can only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many redundancies in Scotland are presently under 90-day notification to his Department.

Mr. Golding

During the period 1st March 1977 to 31st May 1977 the number of proposed redundancies involving 100 or more dismissals notified in Scotland to my Department in accordance with Section 100 of the Employment Protection Act totalled 10,039. This figure excludes those notifications where there has been a formal notice of withdrawal. Information about the number of proposed redundancies still pending in Scotland which involve 100 or more proposed dismissals and which require at least 90 days' notification can only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of redundancies notified to his Department in Scotland since February 1974.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that redundancies involving some 53,000 people in Scotland were voluntarily notified to the Department of Employment/ Employment Service Agency during the period 1st February 1974 to 6th March 1976. From 8th March 1976 to 31st May 1977, 106,284 proposed redundancies were notified in Scotland to my Department in accordance with the requirements laid down under Section 100 of the Employment Protection Act which came into force on 8th March 1976. As notifications made prior to 8th March 1976 were voluntary, no meaningful comparison can be made between those figures compiled by the Manpower Services Commission and those compiled by my Department.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the percentage of unemployment among young people in Strathclyde; and how this compares with the planning regions of England and Wales.

Mr. Golding

I regret that this information is not available. Unemployment rates are calculated by expressing the numbers unemployed as percentages of all employees including the unemployed. However, the age analyses of employees necessary for these calculations are not available.
