HC Deb 23 June 1977 vol 933 c477W
Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how the actual net profit earned by pharmacists per NHS prescription compares with the maximum permitted under the Price Code.

Mr. Ennals

The net profit earned by pharmacists for NHS prescriptions in 1977 is estimated to be 4.9p per prescription. If the Price Code formulae on the basis of "best previous years" were applicable, the maximum might be 7p. Pharmacists' NHS profit margin is, however, calculated as a fixed return on capital employed, not on turnover.
