HL Deb 22 June 1977 vol 384 cc748-50WA
Lord INGLEWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How they reconcile the report in the Evening Standard of 1st June 1977 that the Police Complaints Board will cost an estimated £400,000 a year to run, with the estimate of £300,000 a year given in the Explanatory and Financial Memorandum attached to the Police Bill, as first printed for the Lords on 8th June 1976 (Bill 212, Session 1975–76), and whether they will give an approximate breakdown of this figure.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

Provision of £404,000 is made for the Police Complaints Board in the Vote for General Protective Services, England and Wales 1977–78 (Class IX, Vote 8). This expenditure can be broken down as to: Board members' remuneration and expenses—£77,000; staff salaries and expenses—£197,000; accommodation—£102,000; other expenses—£28,000. The main reasons for the increase in cost since the estimate made for the Explanatory and Financial Memorandum on the Police Bill as introduced in the Commons in November 1975 are rising prices and the Government's decision to locate the board in London.

House adjourned at seventeen minutes before seven o'clock.
