I regret that information on the number of employee weeks of work associated with these projects cannot be obtained without disproportionate cost to public funds.

Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will seek to amend the 52-week rule as a priority to give greater continuity of employment and flexibility to the job creation programme.

Mr. Golding

A general relaxation of the 52-week limit on employment under the programme would result in substantially fewer unemployed people having an opportunity of work. But I am currently considering whether some limited relaxation might be possible.

Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will cause to be granted to local action committees greater powers than at present in the creation and guidance of schemes under the job creation programme.

Mr. Golding

I have no plans at present for extending the role of area action committees under the job creation programme.

Mr. Brofherton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of jobs created by the job creation scheme in each of the scheme's regions and the total number of applications which have been rejected.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that up to 9th June 1977 the number of jobs created and the number of applications rejected or withdrawn for each area were as follows:

JCP Area Jobs created Project applications rejected or withdrawn*
London and the South East 4,908 662 (6,350)

Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the maximum and minimum wages awarded by the job creation scheme to approved jobs.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission, that maximum and minimum wage rates are not laid down under the job creation programme. Employees are paid the local rate for the job. The Commission's contribution to an employee's wage is, however, limited to a maximum of £58.80 per week.
