49. Mr. Dykes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total number of financial loans and grants received direct by his Department, and not through the Department of Employment, from the European Community Social Fund in each of the fiscal years 1973–74, 1974–75, 1975–76, and 1976–77.

All applications to the European Social Fund are submitted through the Department of Employment. Those made by my Department resulted in an allocation from the fund, for each of the calendar years from 1974 to 1976, towards the cost of demonstration centres in the National Health Service to promote good practice in medical rehabilitation and towards the training of associated medical and para-medical staff.
