asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the average teacher-pupil ratio in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in each of the education authorities of England and Wales on 1st May 1977.

Statistics of pupils and teachers in schools in England and Wales are collected only in January of each year; the figures for 1977 are not yet available. Staffing ratios for each local education authority in England and Wales in January 1976 are available in the Library.
