HC Deb 16 June 1977 vol 933 c278W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many speech therapists there should be in Scotland based on the Quirk Report recommendations of 1972; and how many are actually employed at present.

Mr. Harry Ewing

Allowing for the employment of aides, the Quirk Report recommended that there should be 2,500 speech therapists in Great Britain. On a population basis this would imply a target for Scotland of about 240. At 31st March 1976 there were 197 speech therapists—whole-time equivalent—in post in the Health Service in Scotland.
