§ Mr. Terry Walkerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what action is taken in the case of persons who make false declarations to obtain the postal vote franchise at local elections, namely in cases where they claim other reasons when they are in fact on holiday;
(2) what action can be taken by members of the general public when questioning an electoral registration officer's decision to grant a postal vote at local election; and if the decision can be contested in any way, either before or after the election concerned.
§ Mr. JohnApplications for a postal vote should not be accepted by the electoral registration officer if he knows they are false. The registration officer also has power to remove names from the absent voters' list when he has reason to believe that there has been a material change of circumstances. There is no statutory right of appeal against a decision to grant a postal vote.
