HC Deb 16 June 1977 vol 933 c261W
Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give an estimate of the percentage of households owning one or more cars in each region of the United Kingdom in 1975 and 1976.

Mr. Horam

The regional figures for the latest available period are given in the table.

PERCENTAGE OF HOUSEHOLDS OWNING ONE OR MORE CARS
Region 1974/5
North 52
Yorkshire & Humberside 50
North West 50
East Midlands 59
West Midlands 60
East Anglia 66
South East 59
South West 69
Wales 59
Scotland 46
Northern Ireland 50

Data are given for pairs of years since the sample size for any one year is too small to justify a regional analysis. Even with two years' data it must be borne in mind that these percentages are based upon a sample and so are subject to sampling error. This error becomes greater as the number of households in the sample upon which the percentage is based decreases. Therefore, the figures should be interpreted with caution.
