§ Mr. Trotterasked the Secretary of State for Transport when the fine of £25 for driving a train while drunk was fixed at this figure; what would be the current equivalent after allowing for the decline in the value of the £ sterling; and what would be the current equivalent of the fine of £10 originally imposed by the Railway Regulation Act 1840.
§ Mr. William RodgersThe maximum fine for driving a train while under the influence of drink was raised to £25 in 1965, and the current equivalent sum allowing for movements in the retail price index is about £78. It is not possible to calculate on the same basis a current equivalent of the corresponding £10 fine imposed by the Railway Regulation Act 1842.
