HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c499W
Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of total national health expenditure was accounted for by administrative costs of the past five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Moyle

The percentage of expenditure incurred by health authorities in England attributable to headquarters administration was as follows:

Percentage
1971–72 2.87
1972–73 2.96
1973–74 3.08
1974–75 3.85
1975–76 4.22

The figures for 1974–75 and 1975–76 include expenditure on medical, dental, nursing and other professional qualified administrators whose salaries, prior to the reorganisation of the National Health Service on 1st April 1974, were not treated as administrative expenditure.
