Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will provide figures to show the amount of public funds devoted to the maintenance and upkeep of buildings of historic and architectural interest for each year from 1970 to the present.

The figures for grants and loans recommended by the Historic Buildings Council for England for the repair and maintenance of buildings of outstanding or historic interest and accepted by the applicants are as follows:

I regret that the information is not readily available in the form requested. The following table gives the figures for 1976 by regions of my Department. Later figures are not available. My right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales is responsible for listed building consent matters in Wales.
