§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the weekly or annual estimated cash benefits being received by those top civil servants who use a Government supplied car with driver to take them to and from the railway station and their offices on the assumption that these tax-free emoluments are received as the only income of married men on the full salary of a Permanent Secretary at the highest Civil Service rate.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonI assume that my hon. Friend is asking for an estimate of the grossed-up value of the benefits obtained by the individuals concerned from the use of a pooled car. This might be about £1,400 per head, on the basis that their incomes consisted solely of their salaries and they were entitled only to the married person's allowance.
