HC Deb 27 July 1977 vol 936 c312W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will designate speech therapy advanced courses for mandatory grants, to ensure that no students wishing to take such courses are debarred from doing so by the policy of their local education authority.

Mr. Oakes

No. My right hon. Friend's power to prescribe courses for mandatory awards is limited to those which she is satisfied are comparable to first degree courses. She has considered the courses leading to the Diploma of the College of Speech Therapists but has decided that they do not meet this requirement. Such courses are, however, eligible for LEA discretionary awards.
