HC Deb 27 July 1977 vol 936 c216W
Mr. Tom Ellis

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will introduce legislation to seek to make the selling of coal on log effect gas fires illegal.

Mr. John Fraser

There are no powers under the Consumer Protection Act 1961 to prohibit the sale of any class of goods. However, the application of the Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Regulations 1973 (SI 1973, No. 2106) to these fires is under consideration at present. Any question of a breach of the Gas Safety Regulations 1972 is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy.
