Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether any response has been made by the Indonesian Government to the concern expressed on behalf of Her Majesty's Government at the 1977 meeting of the Inter-governmental Group on Indonesia that the release of political prisoners should be speeded up.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will raise through the Intergovernmental Group on Indonesia the question of atrocities committed by the armed forces of Indonesia in East Timor.

The next meeting of the Inter-Governmental Group on Indonesia is not due until 1978. Following the undertaking I gave on 17th March, we have been in touch with the Indonesian Government about allegations of atrocities, which they have denied.
