HC Deb 12 July 1977 vol 935 c115W
Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the pay and allowances of the Armed Forces are still based upon comparability with civilian earnings, or whether other factors are taken into consideration.

Mr. Mulley

In normal circumstances the pay of the Armed Forces is based upon comparability with civilian earnings. The new factor which the Armed Forces Pay Review Body has taken into consideration since July 1975 is the Government's counter-inflation policy.

The allowances paid to the Armed Forces to compensate them for the particular conditions of Service life are not based on comparability with civilian analogues.
