§ Mr. Craigenasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what progress has been achieved in following up the agreement in the field of education among Ministers of Education in the European Community at their meeting on 10th December 1975.
§ Mr. McElhoneThe resolution agreed at the meeting of Ministers of Education on 10th December 1975 approved an extensive action programme. In order to make the best use of resources it was clear that priorities would have to be established, and the Ministers directed that attention should be concentrated on the study of measures to improve the preparation of young people for working life and to facilitate their transition from education to working life.
During 1976 the Education Committee agreed a report on this item, which was considered at a further meeting of Ministers in November 1976. This meeting approved a second resolution on the basis of which a programme of pilot projects, study visits and workshops is now being organised.
Preparatory work is in hand by the Commission on the other main items in the original resolution, which include measures to improve the education and training of migrants, the promotion of closer relations between educational systems in Europe, educational documentation and statistics, co-operation in the field of higher education and the teaching of foreign languages.
