§ Mr. Monroasked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will state the number of entrants, graduates and non-graduates respectively, who entered colleges of education in Scotland in each of the years 1974, 1975 and 1976; and what is his estimate for 1977;
(2) if he will give an estimate of the number of new entrants to the teaching profession required to staff primary schools, secondary schools, and other educational establishments, respectively, to "Red Book" standards in each of the school years beginning in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979.
§ Mr. McElhoneThe numbers of graduates and non-graduates who entered courses of initial teaching training in colleges of education in Scotland in 1974, 1975 and 1976 are as follows:

In the consultative paper on intake to teacher training courses in 1976–77 which was published in March 1976 my right hon. Friend estimated on the basis of information then available to him that to staff schools in 1976–77 and 1977–78 to the standards agreed with education authorities the number of new teachers required to qualify from colleges in the previous sessions would be:
