HC Deb 11 January 1977 vol 923 cc469-70W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many jobs he estimates will be created and lost in Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom, respectively, in consequence of the measures he announced on 15th December.

Mr. Joel Barnett,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 20th December 1976; Vol. 923, c. 72], gave the following information:

I estimate that on the basis of conventional calculations the measures announced on 15th December will reduce employment in the United Kingdom by about 130,000 by the end of 1978. However, as my right hon. Friend said in his speech on 21st December, such calculations ignore the beneficial effects of improved confidence both at home and abroad which the measures are designed to achieve. No separate estimates have been made of the effects on employment in Scotland.
