Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will collect and publish statistics of the days lost through strike action in 1974, 1975 and 1976 distinguishing the days lost directly and indirectly as a result of such action for the years 1974, 1975 and 1976, respectively.

The official statistics of stoppages of work due to industrial disputes provide separate figures for the number of workers (1) directly involved in the disputes; and (2) indirectly involved—that is, those not themselves parties to the disputes, but laid off at establishments where the disputes occur. Separate information for these two categories is not compiled in respect of working days lost because of the large amount of work that would be involved.

The figures for 1974, 1975 and 1976 are shown in the table below:
