Average earnings are the New Earnings Survey estimates of the average earnings of full-time adult males at April of each year, except for November 1976 where the April 1976 NES figure has been updated by the Index of Average Earnings to give the latest available figure.

For the married couple with two children family allowance has been included in the earnings figure and the tax threshold used takes account of the family allowance deduction ("claw-back").
