HC Deb 24 February 1977 vol 926 cc712-3W
Mr. Maxwell-Hyslop

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will ensure that Belize does not proceed to independence without a defence guarantee to prevent Guatemalan invasion after independence; and whether he will make a statement on the progress of any talks on this subject with the Government of Belize.

Mr. Tomlinson

It is our belief that a settlement negotiated with Guatemala is the most effective means of ensuring Belize's security after independence, and it is to that end that our negotiations are directed.
