asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will specify the names of the Secretaries of the Social Science Reserch Council since its inauguration, the university degrees claimed by them at the time of their taking up office, and the university degrees verified as having actually been awarded to them before they took up office.

J. G. S. H. Mitchell March 1970–December 1973.
M. L. James January 1974–February 1975.
J. H. Street March 1975–September 1975.
C. S. Smith October 1975-present.

It is not normal practice to disclose personal details of named individuals. All the Secretaries have held university degrees.

Whether they will list the grants made by the Social Science Research Council, by subject and amount, which have been given to members of the Council, or its Committees, as principal investigators or other leading participants in these projects.

It would not be possible to provide this information for the whole period since the Social Science Research Council was established in 1965 without disproportionate expenditure of time and effort. Available information is as follows:
