HC Deb 16 February 1977 vol 926 cc261-2W
55. Sir John Gilmour

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many foreign fishing vessels have been arrested for illegal fishing in the 200 mile limits off Scotland since 1st January; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hugh D. Brown

One. The Faroese fishing vessel "Durid" was detected apparently fishing illegally within the 12-mile limit off Shetland on 23rd January. The skipper was tried at Lerwick Sheriff Court on 27th January, found guilty and fined £20,000.

56. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are his present plans for the use of aircraft in fishery protection; and whether the Fairey-Britten-Norman Maritime Defender is to be so employed.

Mr. Millan

Since 1st January, RAF Nimrod aircraft have been flying fishery protection patrols off the United Kingdom. I have no plans at present for buying or chartering commercial aircraft, but I will be keeping such questions under review in the light of experience and in consultation with the other Ministers concerned including my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence.
