HL Deb 15 February 1977 vol 379 c1535WA
Baroness VICKERS

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the position of women who are entitled by contract to work to 65 years, but unfortunately through no fault of their own, lose their job after they reach the age of 60 years, and are refused re-employment, as this may mean a reduced pension, and earnings related benefit.

Lord ORAM

My Lords, the provisions about unfair dismissals in the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act 1974 do not apply to a woman who has reached the age of 60 on or before the effective date of the termination of her contract of employment. The provisions of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 making it unlawful to discriminate against a woman by dismissing her do not apply to provisions in relation to retirement.
