Value Added Tax

Mr. Marten

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will resubmit EEC documents R /1746/73 and R /2268/74 on value added tax to the Select Committee on European Legislation before finally agreeing them in the Council of Ministers, in view of the changes of substance which have been made; and if he will make a statement.

These documents have already been considered by the Select Committee and debated in this House. As to the position now reached as a result of the discussions in the Council of Ministers, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I have to my hon. Friend the Member for Ilford North (Mrs. Miller) on 26th January.—[Vol. 924, c. 647–9.] In so far as any agreement calls for change in the United Kingdom legislation on VAT, this will of course be submitted to the House in the usual way.
