§ Mr. JohnThe current estimate of the size of the total prison population—including the borstal and detention centre populations—by the end of 1979 is 41,500. This figure takes account of seasonal variation: the prison population is normally lower at the end of a calendar year.
§ Mr. Kilroy-Silkasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners serving sentences of (a) 20 years and over, (b) 10 to 20 years, (c) five to 10 years, (d) two to five years, and (e) less than two years have dependent wives with children.

§ Mr. JohnOf the 24 boys age 14 to 16 years who were in prison on 31st December 1976, 11 were in Leeds, five in Birmingham, three in Liverpool, two in Oxford and one each in Canterbury, Gloucester and Lincoln. All the nine girls aged 14 to 16 years were in Holloway Prison.
