HC Deb 15 February 1977 vol 926 c167W
Mr. Carson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the total number of civil servants employed in Northern Ireland in 1969; what was the total number employed in 1976; and how many of these civil servants are from Great Britain.

Mr. Mason

The numbers of Northern Ireland and United Kingdom civil servants together employed in Northern Ireland in 1969 and 1976 were about 22,000 and 41,500, respectively. In 1976 these were employed in eight Northern Ireland Departments and 14 United Kingdom Departments. No meaningful comparisons can be made between these figures, because during the period local government functions concerning water, sewerage, roads and planning matters were transferred to the Northern Ireland Department of Environment. No statistics are maintained to show what proportion of those civil servants came from a particular part of the United Kingdom.
