Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many charges for motoring offences came before the courts in 1976, and in the latest 12 months for which figures are available, if he will list the major subjects of such offences; and what estimate he has made of the time proceedings on these offences occupied as a percentage of total court time.

The latest figures available are for 1975, when the number of offences for which proceedings were taken was 137,539. A breakdown of this figure into types of offences is shown below. Information on the court time these proceedings occupied is not available except at disproportionate cost.
